Why I am a Texas DEX Advisor

Melinda Becker
Assistant Professor, Marketing and Management Department
Cy-Fair College, Cypress

I began a DEX chapter to allow the students of Cy-Fair College the opportunity to improve their leadership skills and enhance their career marketability as well as network with other students, mentors and potential employers throughout the state.

Why do I participate as an Advisor for DEX? Wow, I don’t know where to begin! Over the years I have seen hundreds of students from my college and thousands of students from Texas participate in meaningful learning experiences in local community activities, state leadership conferences and national competitions. It is not the winning of a competition that is important but rather the individual progress made by the student towards their personal goals that is more important. My advice to them is not to look for perfection or always to “win”, but rather to reflect at the progress they have made and how that knowledge will help them to be a better supervisor, manager, employer, parent or compassionate human in the world. I am often reminded of a story once told of a grandfather and his grandson walking down the beach which is covered with starfish left behind by the tide. Every few steps the boy would stop and throw a starfish back into the ocean. After he did this a few times, the grandfather said, “There are thousands of starfish on the beach, what you are doing is not going to make a difference.” To which to boy replied, “To THIS ONE it makes a difference.” So while it may be true that not every student in my department will have the need or want to be a part of DEX, to those that are motivated to do something for themselves and their future, to learn from many marketing and business experiences, seminars, speakers or workshops; from preparing and giving presentations; setting up budgets and planning fundraising activities; learning teamwork and leadership skills; participating in competitions; traveling to conferences (whether it be their first airplane ride or they are a seasoned traveler); to each of these students DEX makes a difference…….so how could I NOT be an Advisor and participate in great unfolding learning experiences for those that will be the future leaders in marketing and management? Being a Student Advisor for Delta Epsilon Chi has provided me with an opportunity to work one on one with students, outside of the classroom, to help move them towards excellence in furthering their education, functioning professionally, and in a team.

In addition to working with outstanding students, I'm equally impressed by the level of commitment shown by Texas Advisors, other Advisors and National DECA Personal.
I'm honored to work with both groups.

I am a Texas DEX advisor because I love for my students to compete at the state and national levels!  It is the thrill of  victory and the agony of defeat!  The Northwood students and I thrive on the RUSH!  Texas DEX is the place to be somebody.....a member, a competitor, a team player, a leader, a state or national officer, a winner in whatever you do!

Program Coordinator of Travel, Exposition and Meeting Management
Richland College, Dallas

Being a DEX advisor gives me the opportunity to create learning experiences for students outside the classroom. As educators, it is important that we help students apply what they learn. Through the TEMM Travel Club DEX, my students are exposed to a variety of activities that help them apply what they learn in class. It is very rewarding to see this learning take place and to be a part of it!

Rick Hindman
Director, Hospitality Programs
Central Texas College, Killeen

Being a DEX Advisor gives me the opportunity to work informally with students as they prepare for their careers. I like the aspect of competition provided by participation in DEX; it s surprising to learn how few of my students have ever competed in an extracurricular scholastic endeavor. They enjoy DEX and come back to school the next year to compete and participate again!

Northwood University’s mission is to develop the future leaders of the free world. Being an Advisor for Delta Epsilon Chi gives me the opportunity to be involved and help develop those future leaders. Advising presents me with the opportunity to get to know my students not just on a counselor/student level, but also on an academic/business level. When asked to become an Advisor, never once did I hesitate. Northwood University’s Delta Epsilon Chi students are so well rounded, giving me the opportunity to make a difference in the community right along with them This learning experience will truly be of value to me and I will carry it with me for years to come.

Why be a DEX advisor? The rewards of knowing that you are helping students build skills that will make them successful in all areas of their life, is an important reason for me. I know first hand about this as I spent 4 years as a student Texas DEX member working with my Advisors John Berry, Dean Allen Espree and Ramona Williams.

Working in the technology department at the successful Southwest Airlines Company and teaching adjunct with El Centro College keeps me busy, but I know the difference Texas DEX makes and am committed to sharing the  experience with others. Also, the Texas DEX Advisor's are a nice bunch of people to work with!

Kathy Walton
Brazosport College, Lake Jackson

Why I am a DEX Advisor: I have been involved with Delta Epsilon Chi for 20 years. I started my DEX involvement at Salt Lake Community College in Utah and have held several roles including: chapter advisor, state advisor, national DECA Board member/President/Secretary, national conference coordinator, and national liaison to the National Advisory Board, Western Region Board, Post-Secondary Council, and National Officer Council. I have done some volunteer work with theTexas DEX State Association and this year, am starting a new chapter at Brazosport College, in Lake Jackson. I want to start this new chapter because I KNOW that this organization changes lives. I have seen students grow in their self-esteem, confidence, work skills, and credentials as they move through the program. DEX offers opportunities for students at all levels and provides members the experience to create their own opportunities. DEX experiences have opened doors for students that might not have had the same opportunities otherwise. I enjoy helping students be successful--to know that what I do makes a difference. DEX has been my best avenue to document that student change is possible and success will happen. How to write an essay look here essay writing service. I am very happy.

As a DEX chapter advisor I have a VERY RARE opportunity to actually see learning and understanding take place right before my eyes.  Thousands, if not tens of thousands of teachers never get to experience this.  When in the midst of a workshop or competition I experience a DEX student “feeling” the experience of a lifetime or making a “forever” memory…in just that instance of that experience, I KNOW why I am a DEX Advisor.

This semester makes 30 years of teaching marketing and management classes, and I have had a DEX club all 30 years.  I have seen students that are for the first time given an opportunity to do something on their own.  I have seen thousands of students that are actually getting a second chance in life when they come back to college and join a student club that “really does something”.  When college students take courses that they really enjoy, and then get to compete with their peers around the state and nation to see how they truly “stack-up”, they are amazed at how much they have accomplished! Trying to explain why I love my extra-curricular activities with DEX is like trying to describe a beautiful sunset to a blind person…it is impossible to explain every nuance.  DEX is students participating; students helping others; students caring; students traveling; students competing; students winning and even students with broken hearts after competition…BUT all are willing to “try it again next year”.  I invite all who read this, to give DEX an opportunity on your campus and you will see it payoff ten times over.  In reality, Advisors really do DEX because they are crazy about learning!

Why would a college professor WANT to be a DEX Advisor? Let’s see…they don’t get paid, they don’t get release time, and they don’t meet with their club at convenient hours! However, they do get to work hard, help students raise money for conferences, work at the conferences for free, and do DEX as an extra-curricular activity. They do DEX for the students; they do it because they LOVE IT!

Caryle Weber
Business Management Professor

My 16 years as a Texas DECA/DEX Advisor has been divided between high school and college organizations

Over the years, the difference I have seen develop in my students could be compared to the metamorphosis of a caterpillar into a beautiful butterfly. Often in DEX, a student joins because an instructor has persuaded them to enroll, other students join because it will “look great” on a resume. Some students see this organization as a window of opportunity to prove themselves in the business world.

Perhaps some of the greatest moments in my career have been when students, perhaps persuaded to go to competition, look at me and say, “I have been in school a number of years and this is the first time I feel like I am learning something I can really use for my future.” The transformation that occurs in their personality and self-esteem can be overwhelming.

At the end of the year, the enthusiasm, motivation and understanding of the business world has increased dramatically in those students who have participated in the DECA/DEX events. Instructors of other curricula will ask me why I continue to be a DECA/DEX advisor. I simply say that the greatest reward I receive is seeing the look of excitement and anticipation in the students’ eyes, and the “Thank you for the best experience I have ever had while in school”. This is what keeps me going and renews MY enthusiasm as an advisor year after year. DEX does make a difference in the lives of these young people, and it’s my privilege to be a small contributing part of this difference.
